Lovable John Cho Takes on the Role of Hikaru Sulu for Star Trek 2009
Who doesn’t love the comical duo Harold and Kumar who have been through numerous misadventures and who have made us roll with laughter during the last three installments of this movie? John Cho, who plays Harold in the Harold and Kumar movies, surprised moviegoers when he took on roles that are more serious like that with Green Hornet for example, where he played the interesting character of the lead’s sidekick. This proved his versatility as an actor who can take on humorous movies as well as serious ones and give justice to every kind of role that he plays. But that’s not all. In fact, he also played the role of Hikaru Sulu in the 2009 Star Trek film. This role, which was first portrayed by George Takei in the original television series and first six Star Trek films, was a big challenge for John Cho. Here’s a look at the actor’s life and career to know more about what he had gone through to land this great role.
John Yohan Cho was born on June 16, 2023 in Seoul, Korea. He was however raised in Los Angeles, California where his family moved and settled in the late 1970s. He graduated from Herbert Hoover High School located in Glendale, California. He went to the University of California to pursue a degree in English. After graduation, he taught English at the Pacific Hills School in West Hollywood.
Cho began his career in show business as a print model for Korean magazines. He then worked with the Asian American Theater Company where he appeared in several theater plays like The Taste of Kona Coffee and Euijoon Kim’s My Tired Broke Ass Pontificating Slapstick Funk. What sparked his career though is his tiny role in the famous teen movie, American Pie, where he made the slang term, MILF a big hit. With that came a bigger movie offer role in the 2004 film entitled Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. Other than that, he also starred in comedy shows like Off Centre and Kitchen Confidential, and movies like American Beauty, Evolution, Bowfinger, and Down to Earth.
Before his hit movie Harold and Kumar, Cho had a starring role in the movie of Better Luck Tomorrow released in 2002. This is a dramatic movie that focused on the group of Asian Americans that were living in the southern part of California with different personal and social issues. In 2006, Cho became a part of the comedy show in NBC called The Singles Table. Unfortunately, the show never made it to the screen because of problems in production and scheduling. People Magazine named Cho as one of the sexiest men alive in 2006 and 2009.
Its Cho’s versatility among many others that gave him a big break in the industry. While others could only do comical roles and others could focus on heavy drama, Cho can do both with a little action on the side as well.
