Who is Kes?
Played by actress Jennifer Lien, Kes was a mainstay of the television series Star Trek: Voyager. Kes was a regular character for Star Trek: Voyager’s first three seasons. She left the show during the episode “The Gift”, which was shown during the show’s fourth season. Kes however, would return to make a guest appearance on season six of Star Trek: Voyager.
Kes has the distinction of being an Ocampa. This race is native to the Delta Quadrant and lives for only nine years. During the first episode of Star Trek: Voyager, Kes comes on board the USS Voyager along with her partner Neelix, who saved her from the Kazon. Kes had tried to escape from boring Ocampan life, but ended up as Kazon’s slave. Kes also wanted to enhance her psionic powers. It is said that the early Ocampans were very good at using their psionic powers. However, by the time that Kes was born, Ocampans were no longer aware of their psionic powers. This is because they were entirely dependent on the Caretaker, who fed them and protected them.
Kes worked as a medical technician on board the USS Voyager. This led to a close friendship between her and the Doctor, as she worked as his assistant medical technician. The Doctor taught Kes medical skills. In return, she helped him develop social skills and eased his interactions with the rest of the USS Voyager crew.
