Garrett Wang is Star Trek’s Harry Kim

For Trekkies all over the world, the actor Garret Wang is best known as Ensign Harry Kim from Star Trek: Voyager. Garrett Wang was born on December 15, 2023 in Riverside, California to Chinese immigrants. His parents would relocate to Indiana and then to Bermuda. Garrett Wang has a sister named Laura.

Garrett Wang finished high school at Harding Academy High School in Memphis, Tennessee. After graduating from high school, he went to Los Angeles in order to matriculate at the University of California, Los Angeles. Wang intended to major in Asian culture. But a professor that he met there steered him towards theater.

Garrett Wang played Ensign Harry Kim from 1995 to 2001. Although Garrett Wang was into science fiction, especially Star Wars and Battle Star Galactica, he was not a Star Trek fan. In fact, he had never even seen an episode of Star Trek before he was cast on Star Trek: Voyager. Unfortunately, when Garrett Wang did decide to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation, the episode that he saw was “Code of Honor”. Wang said that many fans consider “Code of Honor” to be the worst Star Trek: The Next Generation episode that was ever produced.

But in the end, Wang said that it was good that he didn’t watch a Star Trek episode before he auditioned. Or else he might have gotten too nervous and he might not have won the part of Ensign Harry Kim.
