Captain Kirk’s Yeoman

Although Captain James T. Kirk was one of the most prominent characters in Star Trek, there are so many great characters around him which made the story more interesting. One of those characters is Janice Rand, played by Grace Lee Whitney in the Star Trek: The Original Series. Rand served as Captain Kirk’s Yeoman and appeared in several film franchises as well as in an episode of Voyager.

Whitney played the role in eight episodes of the original series, all of which suggest that there was a mutual attraction between her and the captain. At first, the Captain was puzzled why the Starfleet had sent her a female yeoman but because of Rand’s excellent work ethics, everyone in the Enterprise, especially Kirk grew to respect her. Some of the episodes she appeared in were “The Naked Time,” “Miri,” and “The Enemy Within.” She was also in the film franchises Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star trek: The Voyage Home, and Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country. Aside from being a yeoman in the USS Enterprise, she also served as Lieutenant Commander in her career with the United Federation of Planets and the Starfleet.

She joined the Starfleet at a very early age and spent almost 30 years as a crew there. It was 2266 when she first joined the USS Enterprise with her blond hair and her wits intact. Specifically, after she returned to the Earth in 2285, she first trained as an officer and was given the designation of ensign. In 2290, although she was already a Lieutenant she also served as a communications officer in the USS Excelsior under Captain Hikaru Sulu.
