Lieutenant Saavik – The Journey Home Saavik is a Lieutenant Junior Grade officer of the Vulcans. During the 2280s, she was assigned in the USS Enterprise and the USS Grissom and involved in the Genesis project. She was a Vulcan Navigator and Science officer who worked alongside the humans under the Federation Starfleet. Saavik was mentored by Spock in the Starfleet Academy where she was subjected to the Kobayashi Maru scenario which is a simulated situation wherein the subject needs to decide whether or not to save Kobayashi Maru and void the Neutral Zone Treaty. After her training she was assigned to be a navigator of the Enterprise under Admiral Kirk. Being the highest ranking cadet inside Enterprise, she was allowed to sit in the command chair and supervise vessel departure from space docks. As stoic as any Vulcan is, Saavik tried to relate with human personality traits and emotions. She was particularly amazed at how during several instances Captain Kirk bent the rules and regulations of the Starfleet. Kirk told her that it was not enough to know the rules and regulations by heart because in the end, it is more important to understand how things work. She went on an away exploratory mission in the Genesis cave where Spock was believed to be killed. When she was transferred in Grissom to study the Genesis Planet, it was when she and Kirk’s son – David Marcus saw the body of Spock. They were captured by the Klingons and David Marcus was terribly killed in an attempt to save her. It was 2286 when Saavik explained to Captain Kirk how his son had died. This was also the time when she decided to stay in Vulcan and thus, was left behind when Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew went back to Earth.
