For the 2009 Star Trek film, which was set in a parallel, alternate timeline, the USS Enterprise NCC1701 was oversized and redesigned. The original USS Enterprise NCC 1701 was designed by Star Trek art director Matt Jeffries. In the outline of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry for the first series, the USS Enterprise was initially called Yorktown. Matt Jeffries had experience with aviation, so the designs for the USS Enterprise had what he termed aircraft logic. The registry number NCC-1701 came from the letters NC being one of the international aircraft registration codes that is used for aircraft that is registered in the United States.
