Take a Ride on the Star Trek Voyager

Fondly referred to as ST:VOY or St:VGR, Star Trek: Voyager is a beloved science fiction television series that takes place in the Star Trek Universe. It is set in the 24th century and spans the years 2371 through 2378. The series depicts the travels of the USS Voyager. The USS Voyager is a Starfleet vessel that becomes stuck in the Delta Quadrant while it is chasing an escaped Maquis ship. The Delta Quadrant is 70,000 light-years away from Earth. The crews of both ships join forces and hop onto the Voyager to find their way back to Earth. This voyage will take about 75 years.

Star Trek: Voyager was made by the trio of Rick Berman, Michael Piller and Jeri Taylor. It is the fourth installment of Star Trek, which was brought to life by Gene Roddenberry in the 1960s. Star Trek: Voyager ran for seven years, during 1995 to 2001. It has the distinction of being the only Star Trek Series that features a female captain. Captain Kathryn Janeway is the main character of Star Trek: Voyager. The show would become the UPN network’s second longest-running series.

Star Trek: Voyager was produced in order to set up the television network UPN, which was the brainchild of Paramount. Work for the Star Trek: Voyager series began as early as 1993, when snippets concerning the background of Star Trek: Voyager were put into several episodes of Star Trek shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Star Trek: Voyager was filmed on the same stages used by Star Trek: The Next Generation. The pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager was shot in October 1994. It was called Caretaker. During this time, Paramount was sold to Viacom. This, Star Trek: Voyager was the first Star Trek TV series to air after the sale.

Another first for the Star Trek: Voyager was that it no longer used models for exterior space shots. Instead, Computer Generated Imagery or CGI was solely used. Paramount had gotten an exclusive contract with Foundation Imaging to provide special effects as early as 1996. This was during the third season of Star Trek: Voyager. Foundation Imaging was behind the acclaimed special effects for the television show Babylon 5. Star Trek: Voyager would use visual effects from both Foundation Imaging and Digital Muse in later seasons.

Star Trek: Voyager begins with a group of disgruntled Federation colonists who live near the Cardassian border. They have banded together to battle the Cardassians. They have been branded as rebels by both the Federation and Cardassian governments. However, others look up to them as heroes. The pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager begins with the USS Voyager on a mission to find a Maquis ship that has gone missing. The Maquis ship is helmed by Maquis warriors.
