Turning Conflict into Harmony: The Enterprise NX-01 Crew

The popular TV show Star Trek: Enterprise featured the exploits of the starship Enterprise (NX-01) and its crew. The Commanding Officer of the Enterprise was Captain Jonathan Archer, and the First Officer/ Science Officer was the Vulcan Sub-Commander T’Pol. Commander Charles Tucker III was the Chief Engineer/Second Officer (Commander Kelby also briefly served in this position), and Doctor Phlox was the Chief Medical Officer. Lieutenant Malcolm Reed served as the Chief Security and Tactical Officer, while the Helm Officer was Ensign Travis Mayweather. Rounding out the list of the senior officers was Ensign Hoshi Sato, the Communications Officer, and Major Hayes, the MACO Commander. These officers commanded a crew complement of 83 Humans, with a Vulcan and a Denobulan. An estimated third of the total crew was female.

The launch of the Enterprise and the assembling of its crew was necessitated by the need to return the Klingon Klaang to his homeworld of Qo’onoS. This planned three weeks-early launch was opposed by Soval, the Vulcan Ambassador, who thought that humans were still not ready to explore the depths of phase due to their volatility and naivety. Predictably, this attitude was not met well by Starfleet, as well as Jonathan Archer, whose father had already told him previously that humans would have achieved greater technological milestones if not for the interference of the Vulcans. The objections of the Vulcans also fueled ideas that they had been hiding secrets from Earth throughout the years that they were capable of deep space exploration. Eventually, a concession with Starfleet was reached when the Vulcan T’Pol was allowed to serve as the sub-commander of the ship for the initial mission, in exchange for the possession of some Vulcan starcharts. This, along with an unfavorable first meeting, led to tension between T’Pol and Archer- he treated her as a chaperone and a spy by warning her repeatedly not to pass all the secrets of the Enterprise and their mission along to her Vulcan superiors. She, in turn, repeated the opinion of Ambassador Soval regarding the capacities of humans for space exploration to which Archer replied that he was merely restraining himself from ‘knocking her onto her ass.’

After Archer’s traveling to Brazil to recruit Hoshi Sato and familiarization, the crew commenced their mission. T’Pol proved invaluable in the mission, the team mostly scientifically. When Captain Archer was wounded and she assumed command (over objections that she was only an observer), she respected Archer’s wishes by pushing through with the mission, instead of turning back towards Earth as Archer had assumed she would. At one point, Archer things she is displaying emotion, but T’Pol claims she is merely carrying out her responsibility to the Vulcan High Command.

At the end of the mission, Archer convinces T’Pol to stay on as the first officer and the science officer of the Enterprise, the first Vulcan officer to serve on a human starship for a long period of time.
