Get to Know Star Trek Deep Space Nine’s Quark

Who is Quark? Fans of Star Trek Deep Space Nine will know that this fictional character belongs to the extraterrestrial race called the Ferengi. The Ferengi are known to be greedy uber-capitalists who are fuelled solely by profit. Quark is played by the actor Armin Shimerman. Quark is the proprietor of Quark’s bar on the station. Before setting up his eponymous joint, Quark cooked onboard a Ferengeti freighter for eight years. When Quark came to the station, it was first called Terok Nor. This was during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor.

Quark initially supported the morality put forward by the Cardassians. But he was later moved to pity by the sad plight of the Bajoran people. He allowed them to buy food and equipment at just above cost. This was a risky move, as Quark could have been penalized by the Cardassians had his actions been discovered. Quark meant to leave the station when it changed owners at the close of the Cardassian occupation. But Commander Sisko urged Quark to stay because the former felt that Quark would promote commercial tourism that would in turn jolt the station’s economy. To sweeten the deal, Commander Sisko, involved Quark’s nephew Nog. Quark continued to act on the sly, conducting a plethora of dubious deals, But this went unpunished by both Sisko and the Bajoran authorities, as the boost that Quark gave to the station’s tourism perhaps overshadowed the respectability of his other transactions. Also, the dubiousness of Quark’s dealings may have depended on the judge, as according to Ferengi law, all of Quark’s deals were perfectly legal. Also, the deals were harmless most of the time. Quark is a smart businessman. He often spouts the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.

Another of Quark’s abilities is that he is a shrewd dealmaker. He helped set up agreements between some Gamma Quadrant races and the Ferengi when the Bajoran wormhole was discovered. It was also through the business deals of Quark and the Ferengi with the Karemma of Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant that the Alpha Quadrant first learned of the Dominion. Quark was involved with these deals due to the machinations of Grand Nagus Zek. After it seemed like Zek had died, Quark briefly replaced him as Grand Nagus. However, it turned out that Zek was still alive. Quark was soon deposed. Quark was also one of the first to meet the Jem’Hadar, who are the Dominion’s genetically engineered soldiers.

One of Quark’s enemies is Brunt, the Ferengi Commerce Authority’s liquidator. Brunt holds that Quark was a bad effect on Ferengi beliefs and society. They first meant due to the scandal surrounding Quark’s mother Ishka, who was able to make a profit even though she was an illegal female. The brutal beating that Quark suffered under Nausicaan toughmen was also due to Brunt. The attack was supposed to force Quark to break up the employee union that had been established by his brother Rom. However, Quark agreed to many of the union’s demands in secret.
