Dr. Phlox is the chief medical officer of the Enterprise. He is a Denobulan, a humanoid that came form the planet of Denobula. He is on Earth, as part of the Interspecies Medical Exchange. Aboard the Enterprise, he practices intergalactic medicine that are very much unknown to the human race.
Dr. Phlox comes from a rather peculiar race. Denobulans have prominent face ridges that protrude from the forehead to the cheeks. They have enlarged foreheads and an extremely receded hairline. Denobulans have awful hygiene issues, they need to be groomed constantly because their toenails grow quickly, and they are brown and yellow striped. They also have the ability to enlarge their faces, like that of a blowfish. They do this when they feel threatened.
Aside form their uncanny physical appearance. Denobulans also possess very strong pheromones. Denobulan females release these romance hormones whenever they feel attracted to a Denobulan male. These species mate aggressively and oftentimes it requires medical supervision. They are polygamous and they have complex relationships. Dr. Phlox himself has three wives and these three wives have two husbands each.
Denobulans require very minimal sleep, but they hibernate two to five days a year. They are very intelligent species with robust immune systems. This is the reason why they have tremendously long life span.
