Get to Know Guinan
Played by Whoopi Goldberg in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Guinan is an El Aurian female who serves as a civilian lounge hostess on the USS Enterprise. The El Aurian are known as the Listener race because they are renowned for giving advice. Bunked at Room 3150 on Deck 8 of the USS Enterprise, Guinan presided over the Ten-Forward Lounge beginning 2365 at the invitation of the USS Enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard.
Although the Starfleet had regulations concerning synthehol, Guinan nevertheless had a stash of alcoholic beverages for special occasions. She was also available to anyone who needed an informal counselor, especially the senior staff of the USS Enterprise. While Guinan listened to other peoples’ troubles, she kept a tight rein on her lips when it came to discussing her own background. Guinan is single, although she has several children. She has been married 23 times.
Guinan is over 600 years old. In AD 1893, she fled her father and sought refuge on Earth. She also has an imaginary Tarcassian razor beast for a childhood pet. Sometimes she still talks to it.
Guinan first met the Q entity when she still called herself under a different name. This was in 2160. One hundred years later, the El Aurian were attacked by the Borg. This led to a diaspora from their home system. Guinan was then on board the S.S. Lakul, which was filled with other refugees.
