Facts and Tidbits on Leonard McCoy
Star Trek’s Leonard H. McCoy, MD, is best known as the chief medical officer (CMO) of the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk.
McCoy attended medical school from 2249 to 2253, after completing studies at the University of Mississippi. He was actively practicing medicine before he joined Starfleet and during those years developed an groundbreaking neural grafting procedure and was for a time stationed at Capella.
An accomplished physician, surgeon, exobiologist and psychologist, McCoy was hired in 2266 to replace Mark Piper for a USS Enterprise five-year mission. He would become the ship’s most popular CMO, receiving awards of valor and commendations of the Legion of Honor during his first year alone. He was also decorated by Starfleet Surgeons.
As CMO, McCoy follows the “old South” practice and always goes for the less intrusive treatment, believing the body has an innate ability to recuperate. When the need to travel arises, he prefers to use a shuttlecraft (not being a big fan of the transporter and similar technologies).
McCoy was also a psychologist and this expertise served him well in his interactions with two of the USS Enterprise’s senior officers, Kirk and Spock. Kirk and McCoy have been longtime friends (in fact, Kirk gave McCoy the nickname “bones”). For this reason, McCoy was Kirk’s constant counselor and confidante and he was not afraid of standing up to Kirk if the situation called for it.
Acting as Kirk’s conscience, McCoy frequently bickered with Spock, whose extreme logic often contradicted McCoy’s viewpoints.
After returning from a successful mission, McCoy retired in 2270 and practiced private medicine. But a year later, he was back on duty to help with the V’Ger mission. On the whole, he served aboard the USS Enterprise and USS Enterprise-A for 27 years.
