All About Lieutenant Natasha Yar

During the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the chief of security for the USS Enterprise-D was Lieutenant Natasha Yar. This character was played by Denise Crosby, who left the show after the first season. But Lieutenant Natasha Yar would return for two episodes: “Yesterday’s Enterprise” and “All Good Things…”

The character of Lieutenant Natasha Yar was inspired by the character of Vasquez in the movie Aliens. Originally, the character was supposed to be called Macha Hernandez and played by a Latina. Marina Sirtis was initially cast as Lieutenant Natasha Yar while Denise Crosby was cast as Deanna Troi. But the actresses changed roles before shooting began.

Descended from Ukraininans, Lieutenant Natasha Yar was born on Turkana IV, a colony that soon became messed up. It broke its ties to the United Federation of Planets. Lieutenant Natasha Yar grew up tough. She learned how to stand up for herself and how to avoid rape gangs. At the age of 15, Lieutenant Natasha Yar would leave her home and her younger sister Ishara behind. She would go on to attend the Starfleet Academy.

Lieutenant Natasha Yar’s guts caught the attention of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. After seeing her save a colonist by crossing a minefield, he requested that she be assigned to his next command. Lieutenant Natasha Yar eventually became the chief of security and chief tactical officer aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Lieutenant Natasha Yar was killed by Armus on the planet Vagra III in order to show off his power. This was during the episode “Skin of Evil”. Lieutenant Natasha Yar was then attempting to rescue Deanna Troi.
