Father and Son: Spock and Sarek
An element of the Star Trek that kept it going for years is continuity in the story and the relationships and transitions of the characters. Interpersonal relationships are evident in the production, making it not only a must-watch for teenagers but for the whole family. Spock and Sarek, the Vulcan father and son are only two of the most prominent characters.
Sarek is a Vulcan astrophysicist who served as Vulcan ambassador to the Federation. The role was portrayed by actors Mark Lenard and Jonathan Simpson in the earlier episodes and by Ben Cross from 2009. Spock was the second son of Sarek and the two suffered from their estranged relationship for 18 years. This is due to Spock’s decision to join the Starfleet Academy despite his father’s wish for him to become an astrophysicist instead. The father displayed great diplomatic skills because he was characterized as compassionate and caring especially towards humans. He may be porely logical most of the time because of his profession but he has a soft spot for the living.
In the episode The Search for Spock, Sarek further realizes the kindness of the human species when Kirk rescued Spock even when Kirk’s own son died. It was also the crew of the Enterprise, together with Captain Kirk who saved Sarek’s life. These evens led to the reconciliation of the father and son. In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Sarek expresses his feelings to his son, saying he was proud of him and his achievements and that he was wrong to oppose his son’s decision to join the Starfleet because the crew possessed good character.
