A Rundown of Uhura’s Starfleet Career
From stepping aboard the Enterprise on 2266 to taking a position at the Starfleet Academy in 2293, Nyota Uhura had a remarkable Starfleet career.
Born in 2239, Uhura studied at the Starfleet Academy from 2257 to 2261. Five years later she joined the Enterprise as communications officer during one of the ship’s early five-year missions, which was led by Captain James T. Kirk. (She would serve in this position for almost 30 years.)
Initially ranked lieutenant, Uhura was a skilled technician and could repair or rewire her own communications in times of crisis. Captain Kirk also lauded her performance as bridge officer, as she could be relied upon to man the navigation, helm and main science stations whenever an extra pair of hands was needed.
By 2271, Uhura was promoted to lieutenant commander. Aboard the refit USS Enterprise, she served under the command of Captain Willard Decker. Later she would work with Admiral Kirk over the course of the V’Ger crisis.
The Enterprise was reassigned to the Starfleet Academy in 2284 and during that period Uhura was responsible for delivering lectures to those undergoing cadet training. She was likewise assigned to the Starfleet Command communications on Earth. Her second promotion, this time to commander, came in 2285. That same year, Enterprise was dragged into Project Genesis and Kirk and his team were able to stop Khan Noonien Singh from stealing the Genesis Device. On the downside, their ship suffered badly.
After the dismissal of charges relating to the theft of Enterprise, Uhura again handled communications on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A in 2287, per Captain Kirk’s request. She fulfilled this role up until the Champ Khitomer crisis. Before 2293 ended, she decided to leave Enterprise and focus instead on lecturing at Starfleet Academy.
