The USS Enterprise Up Close
Also known as the NCC-1701-B, the USS Enterprise was the third Federation starship to be commissioned to be called Enterprise. The USS Enterprise 1701B was commissioned on stardate 9715.5, in the year 2293. When it was built, it was launched from a drydock that circled the Earth.
The USS Enterprise 1701B was led by Captain John Harriman. It was christened with a bottle of Dom PŽrignon, vintage 2265. There were many special guests on board the USS Enterprise 1701B’s first voyage. The included Commande Pavel Chekov, who captained the decommissioned Enterprise-A, Captains Montgomery Scott and James T. Kirk, and numerous journalists.
When it was launched, the USS Enterprise 1701-B was not yet complete. It lacked photon torpedoes, a tractor beam, and medical staff. All of these were set to be delivered on Tuesday, after the launch. The USS Enterprise 1701B’s maiden journey was meant for publicity. It was only supposed to go as far as Pluto. However, the USS Enterprise 1701B happened to be the only ship in range that could respond to a distress call from the SS Lakul and the SS Robert Fox, which were both Federation transport ships.
The ships carried El-Aurian refugees. Both ships had been trapped by the Nexus, which is an energy distortion. Sadly, only 47 refugees were saved before both transport ships were destroyed.
