Star Trek 2009
Star Trek released in 2009 is the eleventh installment of the biggest science fiction movie series of all time. This film, which is directed by J.J. Abrams, written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, is distributed under Paramount Pictures. The film features the main characters from the original television series Star Trek. However, these characters are now portrayed by new actors including Chris Pine who plays the lead as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy. The film is still set inside the USS Enterprise during most parts. Their nemesis this time is Nero played by Eric Bana. Nero is a Romulan who threatens the planets of the United Federation. The story also takes places in an alternate reality that the characters reach by traveling in time. In the alternate reality, you would see the original Spock played by Leonard Nimoy.
Development of the Film
The film conceptualization actually began in 2005. But it wasn’t until November of 2007 when actual filming took place. Paramount Pictures opted to postpone the release of the film from December 25, 2023 to May 2009 in hope that the film would cater to a wider audience.
Plot
In the year 2233, the USS Federation Starship begins investigating a lightning storm in space. Narada, a Romulan ship emerges and suddenly attacks the Kelvins. Narada’s commander Nero played by Eric Bana kills Captain Robau of the USS Kelvin after trying to discuss a ceasefire agreement with him. George Kirk, who is the first officer of Kelvin and the father of James T. Kirk, orders the evacuation of the ship personnel from the spacecraft. However, Kirk makes himself a sacrificial lamb by steering the Kelvin into collision to protect the evacuating shuttlecraft. Years after that incident, young Spock played by Jacob Kogan, grow up on the same planet but is discriminated for being half-human. When he grows up (adult Spock played by Zachary Quinto), he joins the Starfleet. On earth, he meets the young James Kirk (Chris Pine), a smart but reckless young man. Kirk comes across Captain Christopher Pike played by Bruce Greenwood who convinces him to join Starfleet and take on the footsteps of his father. Kirk joins Spock and the rest of the crew on the quest to fight villains threatening the planets of the United Federation. Nero, the old nemesis, attacks the Enterprise and makes Pike surrender. Spock gains command of the ship while Kirk becomes the first officer. Along with Hikaru Sulu played by John Cho and Chief Engineer Olso, they work on to fight Nero and his entire fleet.
The film received good feedback from many critics. It also did very well in the box office and quickly became the highest grossing film in the entire movie series of Star Trek. Apart from that, the movie was also nominated for four Oscars at the 82nd Academy Awards, taking home the Best Makeup award. It is the first Star Trek movie to earn an Oscar award.
