Talented Actors of Star Trek 2009

No movie would be complete without actors. Whatever genre it is—drama, action, horror, fantasy, or comedy—it just won’t make it to the silver screen without good actors giving justice to the plot’s characters. In a movie that is as big as Star Trek, picking the right actors to play different important parts is one of the keys to the film’s success. For the eleventh installment of this phenomenal movie series, the director, staff, and crew have rounded up some of the most talented actors in the industry to give life to the incredible USS Enterprise ship. Here are some of the lead roles in Star Trek directed by J.J. Abrams.

Chris Pine as James T. Kirk

What started out as an awkward first audition turned out to be great news for up and coming actor Chris Pine who is best known for his roles in Princess Diaries 2 and Unstoppable. What happened was that the film director did not have the chance to see the first audition of Pine. After Pine’s agent met with Abrams’ wife, the director was convinced to give the young actor another chance. Once he got the part, Pine sent William Shatner a letter informing him about his role in the movie. Shatner then replied with a note of approval for the young actor. Pine watched many of the Star Trek movies to gain a feel of Shatner’s portrayal of the character. However, he didn’t want to imitate Shatner, he wanted to get into the character of Pine in a unique kind of way so he also incorporated his own depiction of the character, as inspired by other lead movie characters like Tom Cruise from To Gun and Harrison Ford from Indiana Jones.

Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy and Jacob Kogan as Spock

Opposite James T. Kirk is Spock, a half human, half Vulcan character who has been in the Enterprise ship ever since the movie started out. Zachary Quinto plays the new Spock in the 2009 release of Star Trek. But the original Leonard Nimoy reprises his role also on the same movie playing the older Spock in an alternate reality. Jacob Kogan plays the child version of the character. Zachary Quinto took the role really seriously. He even dyed his hair and shaved his eyebrows just to get into the feel of the character. That and his excellent acting prowess convinced J.J. Abrams that he was the right guy for the role. Of course, Leonard Nimoy did a great job as expected. He’s been doing the role for more than 40 years, even Abrams was a bit intimated about directing this actor who’s been doing it for most parts of his life.

Other Cast
Although most eyes are on Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Leonard Nimoy during most parts of the movie, other actors also displayed commendable performances. Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy also gave his all for the movie and the director couldn’t be happier about his performance. Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura also gained critical acclaim. Saldana is foremost known for her role in Avatar. John Cho playing Hikaru Sulu first raised some eyebrows. Even Abrams was a bit hesitant casting a Korean American for a Japanese character. But George Takei explained to him that the character of Sulu was intended to represent the entire Asia on the Enterprise. John Cho didn’t fail his director and the audiences for his standout performance in the movie. Needless to say, everyone did a fantastic job in this movie. Apart from the story, that’s more than enough reason to catch Star Trek. Other than that, make sure that you download also a free Star Trek USS Enterprise Leaving Earth Orbit on your computer.
