USS Kelvin’s Last Stand
The Star Trek human and alien characters are not the only unforgettable parts of this series. Who could forget the USS Kelvin NCC-0514. Even the vessels are created in exceptional ways that make them look like they have their own characteristics.
USS Kelvin NCC-0514 has a single engine and is used as a survey vessel by the United Federation of Planets during the 23rd Century before it got destroyed by Nerada. In 2333, Kelvin serviced the Starfleet under Captain Richard Robau. The Lieutenant Commander was George Kirk. He was with his wife Winona, who is pregnant with their son, James T. Kirk.
A special trivia regarding the Kelvin is that it is named after physicist/engineer Lord Kelvin and Harry Kelvin who is the grandfather of the series director and producer, J.J. Abrams. The registry number of Kelvin, which is 0514, is Harry Kelvin’s birthday. The vessel was first named USS Iowa and a registry number 1201, although the name was not used nor mentioned at that time.
In 2233.04, the Kelvin encountered a black hole created in 2387 causing it to create an alternate reality. During this time, Winona Kirk also started her labor. As the Kelvin observes the black hole, another vessel from the 24th century, Narada which is under Captain Nero, emerges and charges against Kelvin. Captai Robau was killed by Captain Nero in an encounter. Kirk saw that the Kelvin was no match for the Romulan ship so he ordered evacuation. Since the autopilot system of Kelvin was destroyed by the onslaughter of Nerada, George Kirk had to stay and pilot the vessel. 800 crew including Winona and newborn James Kirk survived as George Kirk rammed Kelvin to Nerada, destroying the Kelvin.
